What pushes your buttons? I know what my buttons are, and I am pretty sure they were all pushed this past week!
We all have “buttons” that have been created by our experiences in life. Fear buttons or soul wounds that remain left over in our hearts.
Not good enough
Alone
Failure
Defective
Powerless
Unloved
When something happens that triggers this fear, or pushes your button, how do you respond? Do you withdraw, isolate or shut down? Many of us do.
Depression has become a common word that seems to be thrown around quite often. It is a very real and powerful enemy faced by many people in recovery. I believe that sometimes depression grows out of our faulty coping mechanisms. We open the door ourselves, and Satan sees it as an opportunity to take hold.
“God, where are You? I’m overwhelmed with despair as I wait for your help to arrive. ( Psalm 77:3, TPT)”
Our fear buttons are a residue from the past. Wounds left over from trauma, crisis, pain, grief even death. Subconsciously we remember how we felt.
“My mind wandered, thinking of days gone by- the years long since passed. (77:5)”
But God is bigger than our buttons.
No matter what you have experienced – God is bigger. No matter how much abuse you suffered -God is bigger. No matter how many times you have messed up – God is bigger!
If God was big enough to part the Red Sea, I know He can take care of my needs.
“Rolling whirlwinds exploded with sonic booms of thunder, rumbling as the skies shouted out your story with light and sound and wind. Everything on earth shook and trembled as you drew near. (77:18)”
When my buttons get pushed and I start to revert back to my old faulty coping skills, I remember. I remember all that He has already done for me. I remember His miracles and the power in His magnificent creation. I remember what He has taught me- and I redirect my heart. I begin to sing His greatness and His glory.
What is it you really want?
Our fear buttons are directly linked to our deepest desires. For example- One of my deepest desires is to be loved. My woundings created the button that tells me I am unloved. Another one of my heart’s desires is to make a difference. The button that remains tells me No one hears me, I don’t matter.
When your buttons get pushed- start reminding yourself of the truth! You are important! You are loved! You are never alone! God is bigger than the lies we believe!
God is not only bigger than my buttons, He is bigger than addiction! Nothing can stand against the One who holds the stars in His hands! Your loved one cannot outrun God. They can tell Him no, but He will always come back again and again!
“By Your glory-bursts you’ve rescued us over and over. Just ask the sons of Jacob or the sons of Joseph and they will tell you! And all of us, your beloved ones, know that it’s true!(77:15)”
God is bigger than…. how will you finish that?
If God could close the lions mouth for Daniel, part the Red Sea for Moses, make the sun stand still for Joshua, open prison doors for Peter, put a baby in Sarah’s arms, and raise Lazarus from the dead- then He can certainly take care of you! (Borrowed)
