Third Step Prayer

GOD, I offer myself to Thee — to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! AMEN (Page 63 BB)

GOD, Take my will and my life. Guide me in my recovery. Show me how to live. AMEN (Page 59 BB)

Many people in recovery choose to walk the twelve steps. I have found great truths in the middle of that structure. Today I want to give a new perspective on step 3.

Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

No matter what program helps you move forward in life, the foundation of your recovery needs faith. Without belief in God, we are left to fend for ourselves in a sense. Our will always turns us inward instead of outward. Self becomes the most important focus. When we struggle with addiction of any kind, self is our main problem!

Relieve me of the bondage of self

Self- centeredness, inward focus, reliance on self… no matter who you are that will bind you and hold you back. We want to control others, control our surroundings because it will make US feel better. We disguise our own selfish need by acting as if we do it to help them.

“When I took the Third Step, and turned my concerns about Angie over to the God of my understanding, I felt a freedom that I’d never felt before. I stopped trying to control everything so much, stopped trying to play God when that’s not my job. With this freedom comes the faith that things are unfolding as they are meant to, without any help from me. (”

The essence of the third step prayer is surrendering our will. Letting go of self and allowing God to build us as He sees He should. We believe that He will take our difficulties, but in such a way that we will be a testimony for someone else. He never says, and the third step never says that He will make life easy. He wants to show us how to live In THE MIDST OF difficulties. He needs to- because life will never be perfect.
