Being Free

So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through. ( John 8:36 MSG)

We talk about being set free, but what does it really mean?

According to Webster’s dictionary, being free means not being under the control of someone else, being able to do what you want. Being set free means being released from confinement or slavery. You are no longer bound.

There are many things in life that can make us slaves. We find that we cannot change, cannot stop, cannot let go. We are bound by unseen chains. Historically, a slave belonged to the master. They worked, loved and breathed under the ever watchful eye of someone else.

Have you ever felt like that? I certainly have. The obvious connection here is addiction, but there are many slave masters. Fear. Depression. Money. Anything that you allow to control your life.

A slave is a transient, who can’t come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house (vs 36 MSG)

I recently had to face some of my deepest fears. I very quickly found myself overwhelmed and mentally exhausted from the constant crisis. The first day I struggled. I allowed myself to carry the chains of fear and anxiety. By three o’clock I was shut down. I could not function.

The next day I had a choice to make- was I a slave or was I free? I was reminded of all the times God had stepped in before, and I chose to start to stand on the truth of who God is. I lay down the chains and said :

You are the God of the impossible! Nothing is impossible for you! You are the God of the impossible and you are GOOD!

I will not be a slave to fear! You set me free before and I am still free- through and through!

A slave is under the control of the master- in my case, fear. I am not a slave, I am a child of God! As part of the family, I can come and go as I please. I am able to make my own choices, and I can choose not to think that random fear- thought!

What is a random fear- thought? I can be working or occupied with a daily task and all of a sudden a terrifying thought pops in my head. The worst thing you can think . This week it was being at my son’s funeral or seeing him dead. In other situations a random thought might be a craving or obsessive thought about yourself.

When you are free, you can tell that thought to leave and it will.

When you are free, you can choose to surround yourself with encouragement and hope rather than sin.

When you are free, you can choose to sing instead of cry.

Can you be sort of free? Not really! Think about a slave – it was all or nothing . Whether they carried one chain or ten chains, they were only free when they were completely released from their master.

I do not have the power to set you free, but I know who does. Scripture tells us that Jesus died to set us free. He purchased us, paid the price for us to be set free- no longer bound as slaves! When we understand that and accept His redemption, we are able to walk away from our chains and bondage. We are the ones who will walk out of captivity- the door is open already!
